This Week In Noosa (Cyclone Alfred)

As South East Queensland, including Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, prepares for the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, we are providing you with help on where to find the latest essential information and resources.

Please prepare now for damaging gale-force winds, significant rain and potential flooding (especially in low-lying, coastal and riverside areas). Stay safe and check on your neighbours and family.

CLOSURES & WARNINGS

All South East Queensland beaches (including Rainbow Beach to Noosa, Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast) remain closed until further notice, due to hazardous surf and swell – everyone is urged to stay out of the water. Queensland Surf Life Saving Queensland.

Noosa North Shore Ferry: Will close from Wednesday 5 March at 6pm.

All campgrounds within Great Sandy National Park are closed:

  • Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area
  • K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), Great Sandy National Park
  • K'gari Great Walk
  • Cooloola Recreation Area, Great Sandy National Park
  • Cooloola Great Walk

FOR VISITORS

  • Any visitors leaving the area should check road conditions and plan a suitable route before leaving.
  • Noosa Council-owned Holiday Parks at Boreen Point, Noosa River and Noosa North Shore are closed.
  • All campers and caravaners should pack up now and leave, or find alternative accommodation.
  • All airlines are offering flexibility in re-accommodating passengers – please see Sunshine Coast Airport’s update HERE.
  • All beaches are closed – stay out of the water (swimmers, surfers, boaters and fishers) and avoid walking near beaches.
  • Get Ready Queensland has visitor safety tips including what to do during and after severe weather, translated resources and medical help.
  • A place of refuge is available at the Noosa Leisure Centre, 9 Wallace Drive, Noosaville, for visitors who have no other place to go during Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE

The Noosa Visitor Information Centre in Hastings Street will be closed from Thursday 6 until Sunday 9 March. The Centre will re-open on Monday 10 March, if it is safe to do so. Staff will be available by phone during this time - please call 07 5430 5000.

PLACE OF REFUGE FOR VISITORS & RESIDENTS

Noosa Council has opened Noosa Leisure Centre, at 9 Wallace Drive Noosaville, as a place of refuge for residents and visitors who have no other place to go during Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Pets are welcome but leads or cages are required to keep them contained.

The Leisure Centre will operate 24/7 until no longer required.


PERSONAL SAFETY LIST

  • Fuel-up: Fill your car petrol tank in case of power outages at service stations
  • Water: Fill bathtubs (the water can be used for toilet flushing), sinks and large containers with water in case main supply is interrupted.
  • Cash: Withdraw cash as ATM and EFTPOS may not work if power and internet services are disrupted.
  • Food: Have non-perishable food available to last at least 3 days in the event of power outages.
  • Charge up: phones, computers, emergency radios and power banks.
  • Emergency kit: Torches, batteries, first aid supplies, medications.
